Avery County was established on 1911, in honor of colonel Waightstill Avery, from portions of Mitchell, Watauga and Caldwell Counties.

Avery County is a member of the North Carolina High Country Council of Governments. This is multi-county planning and development agency comprised seven North Carolina mountain counties; Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey. It was designated as a Local Development District by the Appalachian Regional Commission in July of 1974.
